SYSTEM OVERVIEW
RECORDING AND MONITORING, PROCESS, SERVICE, PRODUCTS
Security cameras are the first part of an effective Closed Circuit Television System (CCTV), to complete the system you must transmit the camera images to a remote location that is often centrally located for the security function and monitored by security personnel. The personnel at the central security station will use these images to identify and classify threats. Additionally, these images are also recorded for later review.
MONITORING PROCESS FOR CCTV
The monitoring “process” involves security personnel viewing these images to evaluate the threat potential of activity in the scene. To do so requires a video monitor. Monitors are simply video display screens and come in a wide assortment of sizes and features to enhance the job of the security station monitoring personnel. The selection of the correct monitoring device depends on the images being captured and the physical circumstance of the monitoring station.

The goal of an effective design to monitor CCTV images is to provide clear distinct representation of the image captured by the camera and provide image controls features for the security staff to enhance their performance. In many systems, the monitoring devices also serve as image analyzing devices permitting the system to analyze the scene and send alerts to security personnel when activity occurs in the scene that has special interest.
MONITORING SERVICES
Monitoring “service” is generally regarded as a third party function as when a central station (see Alarm Systems / Monitoring Service) provides site security for a client. Usually, the monitoring function is conducted on the same premises as the CCTV equipment by the customer since it also requires a response team to investigate unwanted activity.

VIDEO EQUIPMENT

There is a wide array of image recording equipment available today. This equipment will capture the images sent by the cameras and store them as evidentiary data or for later review. Video tape was the most common means of capturing these images in the past but today’s security systems now use digital technology to store recorded images. The most common form of digital recording is on computer hard drives. Images are stored digitally and can be manipulated by the system to search for particular scenes or immediately jump to a point in time in the recording without viewing all the images in between. Digital capture also permits the system operator to transfer the captured images to CD or DVD so the images can be viewed on systems other than the one upon which the recording was made.
A qualified expert can help you select the right security monitoring and recording devices for your application.
